International Forum of UNESCO Creative Cities of Film: ,,Sustainability and Eco-practices in Film and Creative Industries”
The International Forum in Bitola gathered film professionals, experts, and cultural practitioners from eight UNESCO Creative Cities of Film – Sarajevo, Potsdam, Galway, Valladolid, Łódź, Sofia, Terasa, and Bitola – alongside local participants. More than 30 representatives joined discussions, screenings, and networking activities dedicated to exploring how the film and creative industries can reduce their environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices.
The Forum opened with a film screening and networking reception, followed by two full days of presentations, case studies, and panel discussions. Speakers shared experiences from across Europe, including the Sarajevo Film Festival, which has become a leader in integrating eco-practices and raising awareness on environmental issues, and examples from Valladolid and Galway on policy frameworks and challenges in achieving greener film production. Macedonian film professionals also presented initiatives in digitalization, sustainable film production, and the role of cultural centers as regional hubs for connecting communities through culture and eco-conscious practices.
Special sessions highlighted topics such as decarbonization of the audiovisual sector, the importance of digital transformation, and the ways film festivals can act as drivers of positive social and environmental change. International experts and local producers, including representatives from Potsdam and North Macedonia, presented concrete examples of how films are being produced with sustainability in mind.
Film screenings complemented the discussions, showcasing works from Gdynia, Sarajevo, and Bitola that addressed themes of sustainability and environmental awareness. These screenings demonstrated how storytelling can serve as a powerful tool for encouraging eco-friendly thinking and inspiring new approaches in creative industries.
The Forum concluded with a joint commitment from the participating UNESCO Creative Cities to continue cooperation and knowledge exchange. The discussions and conclusions will serve as a basis for improving policies on green and sustainable practices in film production, both locally and internationally. The event also emphasized the importance of involving youth and women in shaping more inclusive and sustainable creative sectors, in line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Strategy of the Municipality of Bitola.
